Woven geotextile is a technical textile made from yarns (in our case, polypropylene). A loom is used to weave these yarns together in a criss-cross pattern, similar to how traditional fabrics are made. This results in a strong and stable product with relatively little stretch.

 

Characteristics of geotextiles:


High tensile strength: Thanks to its woven structure, it can withstand considerable force in the longitudinal direction.

Low elongation: Unlike some other geotextiles, woven geotextiles are less elastic.

Good separation and reinforcement capabilities: Often used to separate and stabilise different layers in the subsoil.

Water-permeable: Depending on the weave pattern and material, it can also allow water to pass through, although this is often to a lesser extent than with non-woven geotextiles.

NOT UV-stable: As standard, we manufacture the geotextile without a UV stabiliser. It is therefore not suitable for use on the surface, as it will deteriorate relatively quickly due to the sun’s UV light.

 

Applications of woven geotextiles:

Road and railway construction

  • Separating layer: It prevents the mixing of different sub-base layers, such as sand and gravel or soil and crushed stone.
  • Reinforcement: Its tensile strength helps to prevent subsidence, particularly on soft ground.

Bank protection and hydraulic engineering

  • Placed beneath stone revetments or basalt blocks to prevent the underlying soil from being washed away.
  • Protection of dykes, riverbanks and canal walls.

Foundations and platforms

  • Under temporary or permanent construction roads, crane platforms or foundation structures, particularly in poor soil conditions.

Agriculture and horticulture

  • Sometimes used for soil drainage or as a root barrier, although non-woven or specific woven ground covers are more commonly used for this purpose.
